Lessons about history are often a big challenge for a language trainer, but also for a history teacher. If we ask ourselves what history has to do with language / society / culture, then the answer is easy to give. We are who we are by what we have created by our past and our vision for the future. A look into the history of the Netherlands to us, the foreigners, helps to take another look at the Dutch culture and society. The Eighty Years’ War, William of Orange, the Golden Age, the Industrial Revolution, World War II, the Flood, the European Union subjects dealt with the theme of history. So we know who Anne Frank was, who Rembrandt was, what happened in 1953 and what has changed since in the landscape of the coast. Every event has a certain impact on the development of the identity. We can learn a lot from the history of a country and it’s people.
